Immortal, 2023
Oil on canvas, Clay sculpture
48*70 1/2 in

‘Immortal’ (2023)  is about the caterpillar in Alice's story. The caterpillar is a wise person who understands everything and metamorphoses into a butterfly, which I consider to be an eternal being. I depicted a caterpillar Immortal perches on a pine tree, which in Chinese culture symbolizes longevity and corresponds to the caterpillar's eternal life. For the caterpillar design, I set the figure with the head of a caterpillar but with a human body, wearing a soft Chinese silk robe and holding a pipe. The caterpillar has only one eye but has two pupils. In Chinese mythology, saints and immortals have two pupils. The caterpillar's sight looks at the people playing in the mountains, and although it has insight into everything, it is not deeply involved. Behind the pine tree hides that God‘s-view character, which squints and observes the caterpillar immortal. The three points of view form a loop that guides the audience step by step through the story. The caterpillar's hand and the pipe are equally three-dimensional sculptures.
