The Tea Party, 2022-2023
Oil on canvas
60*48 in

‘The tea party‘ (2022-23) depicts the tea party held by the Mad Hat in the book. My impression of this chapter of the story is crazy and psychedelic, so I created a hazy background by blending pink, blue, and yellow-green. Except for the tree on the left, which is based on the ground, all the characters and utensils are floating, and no light and shadow effects are drawn. I used traditional Chinese painting techniques to paint the trees on the left. In Alice's story, a large part of the story takes place in the forest, and the theme of the tea party reminds me that I would drink tea with my family under the tree in front of the house, so I chose this story to take place in a scene with trees. Compared with the original Alice story, I chose only the most representative Mad Hat and the Cheshire Cat as two of the main characters. The design of the Mad Hat character was influenced by the image of the merchant in the Chinese Song Dynasty painting ‘Selling Eye Medicine’. The element of the eye is very common in my paintings. The eye is often associated with concentration, truth, prophecy, consciousness, and observation, and the eye is a very mysterious symbol for me. One of my "stereotypes" about creepy things is that they must have unusual eyes. So I combined the Mad Hat with this image of the businessman covered in eye symbols to create "Mad eyes" Creatures beyond human perception are often scary, so I added the hybrid creature I had created, a snake-like creature with a cat's head, to this series of paintings instead of the Cheshire Cat.
